My Thoughts on Nier: Automata

This game is probably the most emotional, pull-on-your-heartstrings game that I’ve ever played. Multiple times I found myself on the verge of crying. The cut scenes were done so beautifully, I felt as though I was literally experiencing what the character was feeling in that moment.

Nier: Automata, in a nutshell, is about a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by androids that have one mission – to protect Earth from the murderous robots that invaded thousands of years ago. Our protagonists, YorHa units 2B and 9S, traverse the land to clear out the enemy threat and to gain allies. They eventually meet their biggest threat, a pair of androids named Adam and Eve, physical manifestations of the machine network, that are literally “birthed” by robot machines. They are fast, cunning, quick to learn and ruthless. 2B and 9S also encounter another android named A2, who is on the run from YorHa – the android resistance. A2 later becomes an ally as well.

The game has romance, which I love and hate at the same time! It’s one of those romances that can never be, which makes it so incredibly sad. One character is dying to be with the other, which is so gut-wrenchingly depressing and so sweet at the same time.

One thing to note is the camera angles…they are spectacular! You can never find a game that has good camera angles, the camera is either glitching into a wall or into your own character and most of the time is the not the angle you want to play at. Neir: Automata, at times, has fixed angles that work perfectly with the surroundings and make game play so much easier.

The bosses are complex and require a lot of concentration to beat. You have to dodge sword attacks, bullets or giant red orbs that explode when they touch you. It’s more complicated than what I just described, so here is a video to explain the complexity.

Overall, I was very impressed with this game. Even without playing the original Nier, I still enjoyed this game so much! Not to mention, the soundtrack is absolutely magical. If you like MMO style game play with an amazing story line and epic boss battles, this game is definitely right up your alley!
